Seaside Sightseeing Spots
Anegono Hama (Anego Beach) -Nakizuna
Anegobeachis a shoal with a white sand beach made by the wild waves of the Genkai Open Sea. It is also the only beach in the Kyushu Area where the sand makes a unique sound.
This beach is 1.1kilometerlong and 20meterwide, and forms a crescent shape along Route 202. It is well known as an excellent location to enjoy a beautiful sunset.
When a person walks along the beach, the sand makes a unique squeaking sound caused by the friction of quartz. It is said that only a clean and beautiful beach will make this sound.
This beach offers and maintains a parking lot with restrooms for drivers along this national route.
Keyano Oto
Keyano Oto is well known throughout Japan, as a strangely shaped rock, noted for the scenic beauty it represents of the Genkai National Park.
It is the largest of the three big Japanese basaltic caves. Basaltic hexagonal and octagonal columned shapes and fissures are created by the wild waves of the Genkai Open Sea.
The sea cave is black, dark and measures 64 meters highand 90 meters deep, with an entrance 10 meters wide. It opens facing the Genkai Open Sea and its view is considered mysterious.
Nigino Hama (Nigi Beach)
Nigi Beach is a 6kilometerlong, crescent shaped sandy beach. It is located between Keya no Otoand Nogita Beach. This beach is selected as one of a hundred famous seashores dotted with pine trees along white sand.
The scene of the Mongolian attack from the NHK show, “Tokimune Hojo”was filmed at this beautiful coast line. This is a popular place for people to go for a walk in the spring and swim in the summer. You can enjoy surfing throughout the year.
Sakurai Futamigaura Husband and Wife (the married couple rocks)
It is noted for its scenic beauty and is selected as one of a hundred famous beaches and sunsets in Japan. It is located in the north of the city. The rocks are standing in the ocean approximately 150 meters away from the beach. Sakurai Futamigaura has been honored as a holy place and the location of Sakura Shrine, which is a cultural property of Fukuoka Prefecture. Every May, a sacred straw rope, measuring 30 meters long and weighing 1 ton, is hung when the spring tide is at its ebb. The rocks are 11.2 meters high and 11.8 meters high. In the winter, wild waves break on these rocks and display a magnificent view. Inthe spring, the rocks stand in the middle of mild wavesof the Genkai Open Sea. In the old days, they were believed to be an entrance to a dragon’s palace.
Himeshima (Hime Island)
Himeshima is a solitary island in the Genkai Open Sea. The circumference of the island is 4.3kilometers. (We cannot go around the island). Nomura- Boutouni, a nun who secretly supported the Meiji Restoration was exiled to Himeshima in the first year of Keio. The prison where she was held is dedicated as a temple. Also, the movie “Kokoni Sachiari” was filmed in Himeshima over a two month period from April, 2002. Most of residents of Himeshima were cast in the movie as extras. Of course, the beautiful scenery is a highlight of this movie.
