Itoshima City is where Itokoku was located in the historical Chinese book, “Gishiwajinden,”and was the entrance to the Continent. Therefore, their culture and agriculture were prosperous and there are many historical sites and ruins which remain today. This includes the oldest Japanese copper mirror, Naikokamonkyo, and other artifacts that were found inthe Hirabaru Ruins and are designated as national treasures.
Nowadays, Itoshima City is considered a bed town, since it is touching Fukuoka City in the west, which is a government ordinance city. Therefore, suburban agriculture and stock farms are prosperous and many visitors come to the various shops for direct sales.
In Itoshima, there are many places of scenic beauty. Mt. Kaya is called “Itoshima Fuji,” which is the symbol of Itoshima and was composed about in a Collection of a Myriad Leaves (Manyo Waka Poems). There is a dynamic coastline from Futamigaura to Kayano Oto. Also, there are Nigi and Anego Beach, with their seashores dotted with pine trees along white sand,and the Shiraito and the Senjuin Falls, with water that flows from the Sefuri Mountain Range.


In addition, a wide variety of activities can be enjoyed in Itoshima, including surfing, swimming in the sea, mountain climbing, visiting a variety of artist’s factories, six golf courses, cafes with spectacular views, restaurants, fresh fish markets,famous for their oysters and clams,and touring historical sites and ruins.
Moreover, there is the Kyushu University Ito campus, which is located in the northeast of the city. The total area is 275hectares. 32out of 275hectaresare within Itoshima City. In 2019, when all departments of Kyusyu University move to Ito campus as planned, approximately 18,000 students, teachers and workers will congregate in this area.
Itoshima City has been cooperating with the industry of Fukuoka Prefecture and Fukuoka City in order to make Kyushu University a core in the pursuit of knowledge and intellect. Itoshima City will cooperate with Kyushu University in all fields and actively pursue a scientific urban foundation. They will make use of all of the intellectual resources to improve maintenance of the urban foundation, such as the living environment, information infrastructure and the invitation of enterprises and research institutes to further internationalization of the area.
